Peru: Salkantay and Machu Picchu Trek
OUR EXPEDITIONS >
PERU CUSTOM TREK 2016
IMPORTANT NOTICE: This is a custom trek. Contact Cindy Steuart for more information.
Cusco, the Incan Capital and a historic treasure, is the starting point for our journey. Our adventure begins with a walking tour of this beautiful city, laid out by the Incans in the shape of a puma and teeming with stories of Incan battles and Spanish lore. Be prepared to be enchanted. We’ll spend two days to acclimatize in Cusco while also visiting with and contributing to improving the lives of the children in the Salkantay region as well as the children at El Hogar de Ninos Ciegos in Cusco. The stage is set for our expedition of adventure and purpose.
Our Adventure
The spectacular 5 day Mountain Lodges of Peru Salkantay Trek to Machu Picchu combines breathtaking scenery and vistas of soaring Andean peaks with authentic cultural experiences. The trail can be a surprising combination of challenging and gentle, and every step is worth it. You’ll be enveloped in solitude and quiet; a far-off tinkling of a bell around a llama’s neck might be the only sound you’ll hear. At other times, you’ll meet Andean people along the trail who are living and farming as they have for centuries, eager with their smile and Quechua greeting. At the end of each day of trekking, a refuge for mind and body awaits at a Mountain Lodge of Peru Inn. Fully modern and prepared to pamper guests with delicious meals, warm down comforters on beds, and even an outdoor jacuzzi, the miles will melt away as you relax at the end of each day of trekking.
Our Trek will be fully supported by a local trekking company and led by experienced local guides. We will walk an average of 4-6 hours a day. No previous trekking experience needed, but we require that all Trekkers be in excellent physical condition and able to hike for several hours, non-stop, carrying a daypack. It’s important that a good physical conditioning program be undertaken at least two months before departure.
Our Purpose
Nestled along the Salkantay route is the Manchayhuaycco School, a remote outpost striving to educate the children of indigineous farmers and Incan descendants. Children walk miles each day to attend the school, which is in need of infrastructure improvements such as basic insulation, flooring, and the construction of a room for children who need an overnight place to stay when the weather conditions make the long walk home too difficult. Basic IT needs will be funded as well. We will spend time at the school meeting the students, teachers, and parents and will work to complete the projects we funded.
