Bhutan Trek 2021: Gangkar Puensum

OUR EXPEDITIONS  >
BHUTAN TREK 2021

Join Trekking for Kids and DAJ Expeditions for a unique and exclusive opportunity to trek through the magnificent Himalaya mountains in the happiest kingdom in the world, Bhutan. Rated the #1 travel destination for 2020 by Lonely Planet, this adventure offers the opportunity to immerse yourself in the gentle Buddhist culture of Bhutan, experience the drama of the landscape, and make life a little better for the orphaned and at-risk children living in monasteries in Bhutan as the country re-opens to the wonders of its country and the needs of its youngest.

Bhutan Trek

Our adventure begins in the city of Paro with an acclimatizing hike to the famous Tiger’s Nest Monastery, an important pilgrim site for Buddhists around the world, built on a sheer cliff 3,000 feet above the valley floor. After visiting the Monastery, we travel to the capital city of Thimphu for a briefing on culture and history and to prepare for the trek. After leaving Thimphu, we journey by private vehicle through villages, over mountains, and across beautiful landscapes to Trongsa, the ancestral home of Bhutan’s ruling dynasty.

The Trek

The trek begins in Bumthang to the base of the highest unclimbed mountain in the world, Gangkhar Puensum, 24,840 ft. (7,570 m). The 9 day/8 night trek will be fully supported by a team of guides, horsemen, cooks and helpers. Trekkers will carry a day pack; all other items will be transported from camp to camp by horses.

Our Work

At the conclusion of the trek, our team will visit the local monastery, which is the site of our work efforts. We’ll spend a day finishing the project, soon to be announced, and interacting with the young monks living there. Games, toys, and school supplies that we bring will give ample new experiences for these children.

Other Option

For a select few who wish to see Bhutan but not take on the 9 day trek, our well-connected team in Bhutan is arranging a fly-fishing expedition to catch and release the golden masheer, a sacred and revered fish in Buddhism culture. The fish is one of eight auspicious symbols of Buddhism, symbolizing happiness and fearless living and in the angling world, it is rare to do something few have done, but pursing the Masheer in the natural pristine and wild rivers of Bhutan definitely makes the list. The fishing group will spend 5 days rafting and fishing the Sunkosh River with esteemed fishing guide Jigme Tsuendrup, passionate fisherman and researcher.

Following the fishing expedition, the group will visit the Phibsoo Wildlife Sanctuary before traveling to meet the trekkers, where all will join together at the Monastery near Bumthang to complete the project. The entire party will fly together back to Paro for their respective flights home.
