Bhutan Trek 2021: Gangkar Puensum

Join Trekking for Kids and DAJ Expeditions for a unique and exclusive opportunity to trek through the magnificent Himalaya mountains in the happiest kingdom in the world, Bhutan. Rated the #1 travel destination for 2020 by Lonely Planet, this adventure offers the opportunity to immerse yourself in the gentle Buddhist culture of Bhutan, experience the drama of the landscape, and make life a little better for the orphaned and at-risk children living in monasteries in Bhutan.

Bhutan Trek

Our Work

Our adventure begins in the city of Paro with an acclimatizing hike to the famous Tiger’s Nest Monastery, an important pilgrim site for Buddhists around the world, built on a sheer cliff 3,000 feet above the valley floor. After visiting the Monastery, we travel to the capital city of Thimphu for a briefing on culture and history and to prepare for the trek. After leaving Thimphu, we journey by private vehicle through villages, over mountains, and across beautiful landscapes to Trongsa, the ancestral home of Bhutan’s ruling dynasty, and on to Bumthang and the site of our project at a local monastery. We’ll spend a day finishing the project and interacting with the young monks living there. Games, toys, and school supplies that we bring will give ample new experiences for these children.

The Trek

The trek begins in Bumthang to the base of the highest unclimbed mountain in the world, Gangkhar Puensum (7,570 m (24,840 ft)). The 9 day/8 night trek will be fully supported by a team of guides, horsemen, cooks and helpers. Trekkers will carry a day pack; all other items will be transported from camp to camp by horses. Meals are prepared and served by a chef whose creations rival a great restaurant in town, and any dietary restrictions are well accommodated. At the conclusion of the trek, our team will fly to Paro for departure to home. A full schedule of the trek is available under the schedule tab of this site.

The expedition price includes round-trip flights from Bangkok to Paro, all accommodations in Bhutan, all meals, all in-country mini-bus transport while touring, trekking equipment (except personal gear), fully guided support on the trek, professional guides throughout the stay in the cities, airport assistance in Paro, insurance, Bhutan visa, and TFK-logo shirt. Price excludes roundtrip airfare to Bangkok, gratuities for Bhutanese guides, and any alcoholic drinks at hotels or with meals.
